What Is an Induction Cooker?

Wednesday 26 December 2012

There a number of ways to cook food but generally speaking, in order to do so we need to generate substantial heat. When we say heat we're not just talking about the need to ignite fire from gas ranges which is the modern way to do it or the traditional way through the use of wood or coal. We are referring to the production of heat from all sources including those produced by electric cookers and even solar energy. We have two common technologies to sum up all these which are the electrical that uses electricity and chemical that requires burning gas, wood or coal.

In the type of cooking mentioned above, the process of cooking includes having heat produced in the cooking device itself then whatever heat is produced gets transferred to the cooking vessel like pots, pans, etc . However , there is another way of cooking food that uses another technology that instead of transferring heat to the cooking vessel to cook, the vessel itself gets heated to cook food. This technology is known as induction heating performed by induction cookers.

Induction heating is technically the process of heating electrically conducting materials, oftentimes metal, through the use of electromagnetic induction. This allows induction cookers to just heat the cooking vessel in order to cook the contents. However , this also requires that the cooking vessel be made of ferromagnetic material or those that have iron contents in order for the cooker to work. You will know if your pot or pan has one by simply placing a magnet at the bottom of the pan. If it sticks then this is cooking vessel would work on an induction cooker.

Since induction cooker generates heat using the vessel there will no wasted heat regardless of the size of your pot or pan. So you can place a small pan and that would only be heated without the need to make any adjustment as opposed to the gas stove where you need to adjust the flame based on the size of your pan, same goes for flat top stoves that use coils. This is one of its energy efficient and practical features.

Induction cookers are currently being hailed as a safer and more energy efficient means to cook food. It uses less energy than traditional cooking stoves or other flat tops. It is safe to the extent of being able to place your hand on it even when it's turned on as it won't active unless you have a magnetic material placed on it.
